So I was all set to start plowing through my homework tonight because even though I have a day off tomorrow (thank you, workers!), I'm headed out to Kamakura to see hopefully to dig up a little more history than Obama's recent trip a couple of weeks ago visit to just see the Daibutsu and eat green tea ice cream. We are starting a new unit in my afternoon class on foreigners and citizenship, and our assignment for Wednesday is to watch a video. I plugged in my flash drive, booted up the video file, and instead of hearing Japanese, I heard a familiar guitar riff and then I started to laugh so hard I'm sure the people downstairs were annoyed. What I heard was this:
"Immigrant Song." Played over a video about Japanese immigrants. I'm not entirely sure why I laughed to the point where I snorted a little (I do that sometimes), but perhaps it was a form of stress relief. And also because this is fucking ridiculous. And now I'm sitting here listening to Led Zeppelin III - an album I've never been all that crazy about, but "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" are a couple of highlights - because I'm finding it difficult to focus. My head is full of images of Vikings putting their asses on even more backwards than Columbus and somehow finding themselves in Japan. I mean, seriously, could you imagine what a fucking mess it would've been if the Vikings had invaded Japan? I think only sadism would win in that battle. Also makes me wonder just how many Icelandic immigrants there are in Japan if we're to run with the inspiration for the song (Zep touring in Iceland or something at the time).
And in trying to come up with a title for this post (I wondered if maybe there wasn't a better word in Japanese for song than 歌), and my electronic dictionary has this as its sample sentence:
その丘は詩に歌われた有名だ。 The hill is renowned in song.
I don't know what that's supposed to mean (I think it's supposed to be that this hill was made famous through song... but it sounds odd), but now my brain is on reference overload and this is what I see:
The hills are alive... with the sound of John Bonham beating the shit out of his drum kit
Look, I don't have the tools to make this any more attractive, nor the time. Anyone who knows what I'm referencing here just needs to use their imagination. Remember kindergarten when we used to make pictures with our brains?
Oh God, and yet another e-mail from my adviser. I think this is the reason I was laughing so much before: I'd be stricken with panic attacks otherwise. This week is going to HURT.
ETA: I looked this over about an hour after I wrote it, and holy crap did my grammar suck. I think I just need to sleep...
